April brings wind and a wind down of baseball and softball season for local teams they enter the last month of play. The Laguna-Acoma Hawks (11-3) continue to chalk up wins and most recently completed two double headers two days apart and went 3-1. On Thursday, April 7 they traveled to the four corners and played Navajo Prep (3-13) and defeated them 19-7 in the first game and lost a close one in the second game, 4-3. “We came into the second game a little over confident and ended up losing a close one in the bottom of the 7th,” said first year head coach Brandon Gonzales. “It's never fun to lose but we have used that as a learning moment.”

In that first game Marcel Martin, a senior, had four hits and four runs while teammates Brian Silva and Jayden Paquin, both juniors, had three hits apiece. Pitching for the Hawks were Aiden Aragon and Silva. In the second game,

In the second game, Silva and Neal Kie had two hits apiece to lead the Hawks and scoring runs were Silva, Paquin and Kie. Pitching for Hawks in that game was Paquin.

On Saturday, April 9, the Hawks hosted the To hatchi Cougars (5-6,1-1) and handily defeated them in both games, 14-2 and 11-0. “We came back from our loss and played ball the way that we know how,” said Gonzales. “Our pitching, defense and our bats came alive.”

Coach Gonzales continues to be impressed by the team’s progress to date and is eager to start districts. “We are excited and ready for district play to begin,” said Gonzales. “I am happy that we have been evolving and gelling as the season has gone on---the team gets better every time.”

Next up for the Hawks will be a better test of their skills as they travel to Gallup to play the Rehoboth Christian Lynx (9-1) on Tuesday, April 12. “Hopefully our pitching and defense will continue for us as we face Rehoboth,” said Gonzales.

Lady Hawk Softball

The Lady Hawks softball team is currently 4-5 after three losses in a row. The Lady Hawks lost both games of a double header to Navajo Prep (7-11, 2-0) on April 7th at home. The scores were 16-0 and 18-0. On April 9, they lost to Tohatchi High School by a score of 16-3. Next up for the Lady Hawks will be a double header with Zuni High School (6-4, 2-0) on Saturday, April 16.

Pirate Baseball and Softball

The Grants High School boy’s baseball team had an unexpected break as their game from last Tuesday, April 5, against the Valencia Jaguars (8-9, 1-1) was postponed until April 26. Next up for the Pirates will be district rival game against the Belen Eagles (9-7) at home on Tuesday, April 12.

The Lady Pirates softball team is 3-14 and 1-2 and they went 0-3 in their last three games as they were defeated 15-0 by the Lady Jaguars of Valencia (5-11-2-1) on April 5, a 26-24 loss to Thoreau High School on April 27 and a 13-0 loss to Lady Braves of Santa Fe Indian School on April 9. Next up for the Lady Pirates is an away game against Belen High School (11-10, 2-1) on Tuesday, April 12.

GHS Tennis and Track

The Lady Pirates tennis team is 4-6, 2-1 after defeating St. Pius (2-5,1-1) by a score of 5-4 on April 5. Number two in singles, Karsyn Cash defeated Antonia Mondragon 6-4, 6-3. Number 2 doubles Karsyn Cash and Alexia Munson defeated Brianna Lucero-Brown and Allison Kawane 6-2, 6-0. The Lady Pirates placed 3 of 3 in the Cleveland Tri on April 9. Next up for the Lady Pirates will be Highland High School (1-3, 1-1) on Thursday, April 14th at Highland.

The GHS boy’s tennis team is 4-6, 2-1 after recently losing to St. Pius High School (4-1, 2-0) by a score of 8-1 on April 5. In that match Joshua Willcox and Kolton Bratzel defeated Monte Taylor and Brandon Ekland 6-2, 3-6l. The team also competed in the Cleveland Tri on April 9, where they placed 3 of 3 in that tournament. Next up will be an away match at High High School (5-1,1-land 1) on April 14th. The GHS track and
