MORIARTY, N.M.- The Moriarty Pintos bested the young Pirate football team, 41-0, this past Friday in their first away game of the season.

"We got off to a slow start for a second week in a row," said Brandon Hernandez Grants High School head football coach. "We we're playing from behind the sticks, First and 15, second and long and third and long ...it's difficult to convert when you’re constantly behind the sticks. Moriarty just ran their offense to perfection. The misdirection in backfield is tough for any team, but especially for younger teams."

The Pirates did have a bright side in that game as they blocked three extra point attempts.

"We wanted our special teams to respond, and they played well," said Hernandez.

The Pirates were down 35-0 at the half and were "challenged" by Hernandez to play a better half than they did against Bloomfield. The Pirates heeded that challenge and held the Pintos to six points in the second half.

Overall we played with much better effort, and I am pleased with that, " said Hernandez of the game.

Senior quarterback, Tyler Everhart, is still out with a ham string injury and sophomore Alfonso Kester is currently playing that position.

"AJ’s effort and attitude have been great. We made him honorary captain for the Moriarity game, and he has not blinked or flinched once," said Hernandez of his young captain.

Hernandez, Kester and the Pirates will be tested again on another away game this upcoming Friday as they travel to play the Hope Huskies. Both teams are 1-3 going into that game.
